Greater Charleston Community
Charleston is made up of a main peninsula, surrounded by numerous islands and barrier islands that are also part of the Charleston Metro area. The only working tea farm in the United States, The Charleston Tea Company, is located on Wadmalaw Island. Edgar Allen Poe served in the military in the 1820's at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, which became the setting for "The Gold Bug". During the summer of 1934, George Gershwin rented a cottage on Folly Beach where he began writing the American opera Porgy and Bess. The annual Family Circle Cup tennis tournament has been held on Daniel Island since 2001. The movie The Notebook was filmed almost entirely in Charleston.
